Growing in tough lands?

Gardenry

Anyone here tried to grow your own food in a tough area? I'd love to hear some stories. I've often wondered about living off-the-grid in Alaska or even overseas. I've watched some reality shows about living in the Alaskan wilds or living in the desert, but I always figured they were probably fake. My toughest growing adventure was gardening in a section of Utah and seemed to be all rock and red clay. Hardly exciting, but I felt like I conquered the world when I plucked my first ripe tomato off its vine.

It's possible to farm in Alaska. I wouldn't have thought so - at least not without a greenhouse, supplemental lighting, or some other assist - but I worked with a couple who used to make it their livelihood. They owned a good-sized farm outside of Anchorage. It stays daylight for most of the summer, so some crops really thrive there.
