Combines growl in feeder

its either varible drive bearings on the federhouse behind the piston or the reel pump bearings are getting loose i've seen and heard both the varible drive bearings are not greasable also check the mount when you have this apart i've had alot break and crack

i will put money on the top bearings gone dry in the variable speed behing the piston and the last post is right we had 3 with cracks

has mech one said top bearing variable speed behind piston i would almost put money on it

Thanks, I will check those bearings. Guru, I think you cured my last problem about 3 yrs ago with grasshopperguts plugging the return elevator. The steel paddle is on the chain every year while doing peas.

Mind if I ask what the steel padddle is aboutIJ We have had some problems with our return in green crops. It will plug up when it seems it is not loaded too heavy, last year we even broke the elevator chain at one point. Thanks for any info.

Check lower bearings in return elevator I had a bad bearing that would lock up make the clutch slip and you spin it backward a little then it would run fine for a while. took time to find it was a bearing and not choking up

We had a bad grasshopper problem and they were sitting all over the peas that were lodged bad. When they went thru the combine they ended up going up the return and turning to mush which was very sticky. It would build up on the floor of the return elevator until it slipped the slipclutch. JD has this option of replacing one paddle on the chain with a steel one to keep this stuff chiseled off and it works well. Mine was simply cut from 3_16 plate. We also found that replacing the two rubber paddles on that mickey mouse feeder wheel at the top was needed under extreme conditions. I made some for there from 1_4 aluminium. Of course all these bits are removed after peas harvest as they may cause faster wear on the elevator housing. We tried a chain from loewen that had rigid plastic paddles which also worked well until the bottom edge got worn round.

Hey, ERKY, I had my 9500 up to my shop today and took my variable shieve off the top of the feeder and sure enough the bearings on it were loose too. So I randr'd them this afternoon. Reel drive was ok, both upper and lower variable flat belt idlers were loose too, so they are new now. Mounting bracket for variable shieve did not look broken or cracked, though. 1300 sep. hrs, and original bearings. gs

My first guess is not bearings, they usually dont growl,,, I had the feederhouse belt wear thin enough that the inner coggs of the belt were rubbing too far down inside the sheaves causing a distinct growl. Took me days before I realized what it was.
