just say one thing i work on the usa harvest run for 3 years an australia harvest run for the last 2 years an now i am starting up combine bussines of own an 1 thing i have learnt is that no one has left cause of the work its the g_f back home that hurts the most an 1 thing for sure make sure works alot of forigns guys they are there for the fun more then the money side of things an he will have freinds from all over the world an he will betought how to drink cause thats all you do when it rains an go into the local bar an chase the local girls an the best thing you start down south go from town to town doing the same thing

I have done the harvest run for almost 8 years. 19 years of age is very young, but I have seen a few that age perform extremly well, because they already had experience. You should not have to worry about a CDl. A good custom harvester helps everyone of his guys to get a CDl. It is in his own interest to have everybody being capable of operating everything to be able to respond best to any situation. Most guys I have seen on the harvest run like to switch equipment after a while. I have always supported switching, because it broadens their horizon and makes the person more versatile and usefull. This is a very intresting thread. Here is my experince on and about the harvest run. In 1979 I was all set to go south on a harvest run I had been hired by a crew (They had brand new 1480's) but my dad had other plans for me. He thought I was to young so I rented some ground started to farm. I thought that I would not have another chance to go harvesting. My dad passed away in 1987 in 1988 I went on a harvest run I was 28 and I had the time of my life. I worked for the same crew until the end of the 1992 season my boss retired from harvesting. In 1993 we started our own custom harvest operation and are still harvesting. Was my dad right in keeping me home I guess we will never know. But I do know this I talk to people every day and they will tell me they wish they had gone on a harvest run when they were younger. I will say this if your son does go try and find someone who has worked on the crew before and find out how the boss is. I have heard some horror stories about some outfits. But there are way more good crews to work for then the other kind. I have had employees tell me I was the best boss they ever had. I have had employees also quit on me but most of the ones who quit their reason is either the girlfriend, homesick or the strangest reason I ever had was and I quote "All we ever do is combine" I will say this I would sooner hire a 19 year old then a 40 year old, the young kid will do what you ask him where as the 40 year old may think he has a better way of doing it.

Hey Al, I heard that one time too, "All we ever do is combine." Then when we were in SD on a rainy day I wanted to take them to MT. Rushmore, they didn't want to go! Those two guys drove me crazy all summer. Out of about 50 to 60 young men that I've hired those two were the only bad apples in the bunch.
