The water pump on our 8820 went out. It didn't get into the oil but it sprayed water all over the right side of the cab. The combine has 3200 hrs on it.

Some things never change. We had a JD 95H that we ran for nearly 40 years. Harvested about 1,000 acres_year. Each year when we went to get it ready we'd drain the oil and a lot of water_coolant would come out with the oil. The best mechanic around ensured us that it was a defect in the JD engine design and that we didn't need to worry about it. We only saw water_coolant after the machine had been sitting over the off season. We must have been lucky though because I know of a number of silimilar 95's that the engine did fail them. My father did explain to me that ours had a larger engine than that of the standard 95 so that may have been the difference. Good luck getting going again.

What your engine is probably suffering from is wet sleeve failure. With wet sleeve engines there has to be a gasket or "O" ring to keep the water that surrounds the sleeves from getting into the oil. Probably the failure is from cyclinder sleeve vibration since these things vibrate violently when the engine is running. More likely than not one sleeve(s) have failed and this is why the water is in the engine.

Sounds like you may have electrolisis or stadic electricity that may have pitted your liners (sleeves) this comes from not keeping up your water filters or it could also be the O-rings on the sleeves as someone previously mentioned. Good luck, hope you find the problem soon so as to get back harvesting as sounds you have a good crop. I'm from central ND our Russ wheat is 60n 15 protein and runs about 25 bpa the strong winds 60 to 80 mph we had last night are to blame for the low bushels, some places its hard to tell there was a windrow there .

did your gear driven water pump fail and push coolant throu the gears into the motorIJ Sounds like it..I have not heard of a sleeve in a Deere doing what the below guys said in only 3000 hrs.

Many gear driven water pumps have failed a bearing or seal at about 2500 hrs. no way to check the bearing unless you pull the water pump out. once the seal goes it only takes a minute to fill the crankcase with coolant. could mean just a new water pump kit, or worst case an overhaul.

I have seen three 9600 water pumps fail in the last two years. Hours ranging from 1000- 3000 hrs. Every time they replaced the water pump and lost the engine the next day.
