Combine and feeder must be running for auto head to work. I don't mean this to sound dumb, just trying to help in case you had forgot.

I have combined about 100' trying to make it work. I had a 1020 on a 1420 and it would work without it running. Just hit the switch, down it goes and automatically adjusts to my setting, running or not. right now my guess is my cable is seized, but I never had it happen before in 10 years, and this is a 1999 model head. thanks

In auto when you click the button to drop the head it should drop down to your set height. If you have to hold the button to get it to drop then your pot isnt set in sequence to your height knob. Start at the beginning and raise head, put safety stand down and check feelers to see if they are touching. Make sure sensing pipe is turned down and is not sticking. You should be able to turn pipe and it should spring back. When you adjust your pot to the height knob turn knob clear to the left and adjust pot to completly lower head to the ground. Hope this makes sense, its hard to explain on keyboard. Good luck.

I am still courious. Could my cable on head be stuck. I can't rotate the finger shaft even though it seems loose in the pivots. Thanks

It is fixed! It was the cable on the head. Wouldn't budge. Now operates normally

Our cable was shot on our 1020 head. They have changed the cable to a "new and improved" model. Also you can run the auto height without the feeder running, we run it across the yard every year to make sure everything works.
