I believe if you go to farmphoto you can find the pics on there with some talk about what happened.

I've been looking for it, but can't find it. I think it may have been in the Dalles area of Oregon south of the Columbia. The Palouse topography varies considerably from one area to another. Along the big rivers in the southern part, it seems to me, there can be very long steep hills. In Oregon, some areas have alot relatively gentle rolling areas, but some areas can be very steep with long hills. John Mc Manigal has posted alot of pics on "Farm Photo" from The Dalles, area and I think the pics were from that area although I don't think it was any of their machines. I don't think anyone was seriously hurt if they're the pic where the combine was backed off the edge of a sod bank. There have been tragedies from upset combines though not common. Years back, the driver who upset (probably inexperienced ) often couldn't get up a hill with a combine and lost it going backwards. When I was just starting truck driving for my dad, I pulled out of the field and passed a neighbor who had and old 55H upside down at the bottom of a steep but short hill. I must have just missed it. As he lit up a cigarette, he sait he remembered looking up and saw the combine doing a flip right over top of him. (broken universal joint). Brake was on the transmission so with the broken u joint there was no brake. A brake wouldn't have helped anyway in that case it happened so fast. Never worried about that happening on the 95H. My dad always liked the IH with the brakes on the final drive.

Thanks Red, I've been looking and even searched on farmphoto. Haven't come up with anything yet. Four of the pics I saw were take from all sides of the combine, the other one was taken from the air or the other side of the ravine. The combine looked like it rolled three or four times down the ravine just after it turned around. looked like the drive wheel dropped off in a small ditch, then the weight shifted in the grain tank and over it went. looks like a 30 ft. header broke off right on the first roll. Judging from the length of the header, it looked like the 2388 rolled about 250 to 300 feet down the grassed area. I can e-mail the pics if you like. WC

Wildcat I, Thanks for the offer to send pics, but no need to bother since it looks like Mostly Green found the pics. I think it must be in Oregon. looks like some of the hills that I saw in the Oregon area. Could be in WA or ID too near the canyons. I noticed your Dad bought his combine at Howards years ago. I've spent a couple times wandering through the southern plains years ago. I've been there more than once just looking around.

Thanks Green, I checked out the link. From the comments, it looks like it happened in the Northwest. Sounds like the driver survived. Darn luckey he was. WC

Hey guys. John McManigal once told me that the 2388 on that picture's hydro stalled going uphill and apparently the driver braked, but it was very steep and so the combine started sliding backward on the stubble. The one wheel went over the edge, the header unhooked and there she goes. The driver survived and they put that header back on their new 2388. The guy apparently felt slightly uneasy the next year when he cut past that same edge....

No problem, WC, Take a good look at that pic! Am I wrong, or does there appear to be a Hillco sidehill leveler on that combineIJ I know it's hard to tell from all the damage, but the front tires look equally tilted.

95H had inboard brakes to. Not safe. First outboard brake I saw was on the Gleaner CH. One young boy killed here in early sixties on an AH with inboard brakes. Then there was the JD 55 with fakebrakes. Grab the handrail with both hands, stand up on the brakes and pull. That failing there was a 14' emergency brake out front.
