Been a while since we got rid of our 550 - but believe its similar to 850_860 machines - chains in gear-box could be worn. Many operators add pipe fittings to increase gear-oil level in chain case to keep chain cooler... ...If chains are worn and you replace do not use cheap roller chain.... HTH Doug

It sounds to me like the noise you hear is proably coming from the small needle brg on the end of the cylinder shaft in the gear box. I am famillar with 510 gear boxes but I am sure they are the same as a 550. They do not have chains like the 750_760's. When we ran 510s we removed the small needle brg from the case and ran with out it. It is not needed and will save it from falling apart and destroying the gears.

Thanks, for your reply Helland Harvester. You are correct this is just like a 510. No chains. I changed the needle bearing last year, and the noise stopped for a while. This year the noise is back. Please help me understand what is going on. When the shaft is turning, the end of the shaft is vibrating the needle bearing and the needle bearing in not large enough to take the load. Do you think the main carrier bearing has enough slack in it to cause the shaft to vibrateIJ Also, when you removed the needle bearing, what did you plug the hole withIJ
