Combines Help with Dial A Matic

Have had similar experience with 7700 Dial-a-matic. Ran 853A row crop head with similar DAM parts and could not get it adjusted. Had tech manual out and even talked to dealer's best combine man with non productive results. Can't keep head down on ground....wants to cut about 6"from ground. Ran other machine in beans. Ashamed of stubble(and beans) left in field. Need pointers on what to look for. Obviously I have missed something.

is there an accumulator hooked into the feeder house lift cylinders. And if so is the valve openIJ Had a 7700 awhile ago but never had a dial-a-matic so I cant remeber. Those are things to check.. had heeder bounceing on 7720 b_c accumulator valve wasnt open. And I think there was a post on the massey page under headers or mods or something about guys that have had the same problem (header bounce) putting a jd header and dial-a-matic on older massey combines till they put an accumulator on. hope any of this info helps, Ed

Have you tried to adjust the automatic drop rate valve under the cabIJ If you screw it in it will slow the rate of drop down. An accumulator that has lost its nitrogen charge can also cause the header to move in jerky fashion. The accumulator softens the raise and lower action of the hydralic valves. Another thing to look at is having the correct tire pressure. low psi makes the tires soft and bouncy, and will amplify any jerky movements from the header. Adusting the sensing box does what you experinced, raises and lowers the cutterbar a bit. The box should be adjust to find a "sweet spot" that lets all three positions of the dial a matic work right. If adjusted too far one way or another, you will lose, say, the lower function on postion n3 or the raise function on n1 position. The contact arm gets too far and goes past the contact strips in the box.

As others have mentioned, changing the hydraulic drop rate valve may help. Playing with the accmulator drop valve may be useful too. Also check the accmulator charge pressure, I bought a one year old 9500 some years ago but used it with my older 920 head. I had a bounce problem and thought that possibly my accmulator had lost its charge. It turns out that the accmulator had too much charge for that head. Apparently the previous owner had a larger heavier head or maybe it didn't work that well for him either. Anyway the Tech at the dealership lowered the accmulator pressure which helped the problem. last year I traded the 920 for a 925 to be used on the same 9500. I thought that possibly the accmulator would need to be charged to a higher level again for this heavier head. It turns out to work fine. The owners manual gives suggested charge pressures for the various heads.

Thanks for all the help guys. I give the ideas a try. Now it snowed so I imagine we wont mess with it tell it warms up now. We cut beans for a guy just last friday that had a major breakdown with his machine. He had a bad crop to boot, but at the price they are now didnt want to just leave them standing.
