At the ASAE convention in louisville a few weeks ago, the biggest single topic was "biomass" harvesting. The convention also ran along with the International Conference on Crop Harvesting and Processing. You can find all the abstracts on the topics at the asae.org website. You're bang on by the way.

It's a thought. How does the price of coal compare to the price of corn per metric tonIJ How do the heating units of corn compare to the heating units of coalIJ

I was looking at corn furnaces, and they had a comparison against all types of other fuels and corn seemed to win in all the catagories, that is in price and btu's. Take a search under corn furnaces and you'll find it there.

I haven't found the comparison to coal yet. Here is another idea. In the 80s I have seen a combustion engine that burns vegetable oil, like oil pressed out of olives, rape, soybeans, sunflowers or any other oil seed. This engine was compared to a diesel motor. But it was only half the size of a diesel with the same horsepower. It did not have a radiator, because it created so little heat, that an oilcooler was sufficient. I have seen a tractor, the size of a 4020 JD, that was fitted with this vegetable oil burning engine. But it was only a three cylinder motor still putting out 100hp. To get the fuel for this motor, all you'd have to do is, press the oil out of the seeds, filter it a little and put it in your tank. This motor can also consume diesel fuel, if a station with vegetable oil would not be close. All of the above DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO with Biodiesel. Biodiesel is very expensive, because it requires a raffinerie and makes the oil companies richer. Do you want to know moreIJ Go to www.elsbett.com

When you get to www.elsbett.com, just klick on the little British flag in the right center of the screen.

I will give you one simple reason why not. OIl COMPANIES. The same ones who put up a stink about ehtanol, biodeisel, and wind generators. Those big oil corporations control more than a person thinks.

Already happening here in U.K. In counties lincolnshire and Norfolk in England they have been big baling all the straw for a couple of years now and it is used to power a specially built straw fired power station. A new trial is ongoing to grow "old" style long strawed oats and big bale it, grain and all in June to start the baling season one month early to justify the expenditure on machinery.
