Combines Hey CRG about the header control

Haven't got to header control yet. Just got face plate adapter on header yesterday. I'm taking my time because boy is it hot here. Going to hook combine to header today or tomorrow to see what I have to do about drive shafts. Hoping I can use same shafts I use for my 444 corn head. Which reminds me. I have a question. If I have to go with PTO shafts and cut some of the header shaft off to make them shorter do you think it would be alright to use a cutting tourch to do it with or will a tourch mess the metal up and cause it to wear out faster than it would if I used a sawIJ Don't worry about too many words. The more the better. I need all the info I can get. Harolddog told me he connected the two shafts directly with a adapter fitting with one hole large enough to fit header shaft and the other hole to fit pot shaft. The only thing that bothers me about that is if the header shaft should move around it could tear up the pot. Thanks for info: Charles

Re-the drive shafts, yes they have to be shortened, and a bearing to hold the end of the shaft closest the feederhouse.I used a hand-held band saw, because I had it ,but I think you could cut them off neatly with a torch and trim them back up again.I don't know that the shafts are tempered. Re-the sensing shaft. You probably can mount it directly to the pot shaft. It shouldn't be much,if any more susceptable to damage than the DAM box was.You might try to fasten the pot to a piece of leather like the 820 used or a piece of fairly stiff belting to give the pot just a little bit of 'give'.

I don't have a hand band saw so it will probably be a torch. I thought I might get by without the extra bearing after all my 1020 22 1_2 foot header uses a long shaft with no support but after I try it I will add them if needed.I was thinking on the pot of making the bracket to hold it large enough to keep the body from rotating but not bolting it down to the box so that it could have a little in and out movement. I have got to get back with Harolddog and see how he indexed the two holes you have to drill. The one for the roll pin on the shaft and the one for the set screw for the pot.I'm sure they have to be offset from one another. I have never seen a 820 setup so I don't know about that but the belting sounds good. I might try it.
