The gear on the injection pump is not keyed. Therefore, when you install the injection pump you can advance or retard the timing as much as you want to with the location of that gear. The pump shop will set the timing of the pump and lock the pump in place. Then, with the engine at TDC, as indicated by a plastic pin engaging the flywheel, the gear is tightened and the engine is timed. We've always had our dealer pull the pump and send it off to the pump shop over the winter, so I've not actually set the timing myself. However, everyone says that it is pretty straightforward. I would suggest having the pump gone through rather than just advancing the timing. The governor, aneroid, fuel rack, and several springs all need to work together in order for you to get the performance you want. I doubt you will see much improvement by simply advancing the timing.
