Combines Hugger head shell excess

I have been thinking about that for a while. Here is a link to Calmer. They don't have anything for Gleaner but maybe the smart guys here can come up with something. I was thinking about cutting some flutes back to get the window effect. http:__www.calmercornheads.com_trashReduction.htm

I think I will call them. Maybe having that window would allow the stalk two slide farther up the stripper plate. One does not have alot to loose by trying it.

Interesting reading. I think that is why the steeper (older) heads sometimes feed better. Take Marion's eggbeater example and run the straw in at an angle and it will feed just fine. Maybe the newer flat profile heads need rolls with spiral flutes, rather than straightIJ Or, maybe a system like they use to de-bark trees used for power poles where they grab one end and pull it thru a dieIJ But then you would still get too many leaves along with the ears...

After running both Hugger and John Deere heads. You can shell a whole bunch more corn in the Deere head if you do not keep your stripper plates just right than you ever could with a Hugger. But's its green so it does not matter. A deere head does go thru down corn better than a plastic head hugger. They all have their good points.

It does help to keep rollers and points in tip top shape but that sharp square edge does not last long. There was talk about chroming them but not sure where to get that done. Wished one could figure out how to wear more of the knife edge. I talked to the calmer man and he said that if one would would cut two of the knife edges back it would be the same as theres. Think I will try. Maybe a little can of green paint would help or just make me feel better. NOT!!!

If your blades are good then maybe your spirals are worn. I had trouble w_that shortly after we flipped the blades and just thought they needed replaced until i put on new spirals. Holy cow what a difference. Not sure why that helped so much but afterwards the corn fed great and the ears were snapped 1_2 - 2_3's way up the deck plate. That seemed to cut down on the shelling too.

Yes they take out two per roll all the way but if one is trying different things part way back can't hurt anything.

I was thinking,(scary thought) could we remove one flute per roller and bolt the other two on with the same set of bolts so they are straight across from each otherIJ would this be too much stress for the boltsIJ Probably need 1_4 inch longer bolts. I can't look at my head till after wheat but is this a possibilityIJ I lost one flute a couple years ago and finnished the day that way with no problems.

When you lost the flute did the stalk ride farther back on the stripper plate or not. I thought by cutting part of the flutes off the stalk would ride back farther and thus less head shell.
