Combines Hyd Deck Plates

I have an 893 with hyd deck plates. I think they are a good investment. As far as the amount of adjusting, this varies from year to year. Some years I do a fair amount of adjusting and other years not much. I have found that the plates can seize. In 2002, I attempted to move the deck plates when I started out in the first field. One set did not move and I ended up breaking the adjustment arm on that row. Fortunately it was easy to reweld the piece back together. When we removed the gathering chain and deck plate for the repair, we noticed rust buildup. The deck plate rides on a piece of plastic which should allow it to slide freely. However rust had built up to make the movement difficult. Fearing that we might have problems with the other rows, we disassembled them and cleaned up the rust. The disassembly and cleaning was not very difficult but did take some time. This year I cycled the deck plates several times in my preharvest check and had no problems.

We have a 893 with hydraulic deck plates. When we traded heads in 2001 we didn't think we needed them, we figured that we wouldn't change them very often. But the dealer talked us into them. They are very nice to have. Where the corn varies, like in some low or high spots, you are changing a them couple times every round. They also work good to control the amount of trash going into the combine as the conditions change through the day. We have had no problems with them freezing up or seizing. I did hear of someone who had them that hated them because no matter where he set them one row was always shelling. Found out that the arm that controlled that row was loose and that row was running all the way open all the time. I hope this helps. If you want to know more get post here or send me an e-mail.
