We have a 5488 and a 5288 both 2wd. The main trouble they give us is they will occasionally quit pulling in either the odd or even gears. This is caused by two electric valves under the floorboard. One is for the odd, the other for the even gears. They are not hard or overly expensive to replace.

See if the transmission has been updated, make sure before you take it down the highway to shut off the front wheels or you will be spending 200-400 dollars everytime.otherwise a good tractor. If those electric switches ever stick 99% of the time they just need to be cleaned.

I purcahsed the same tractor in the summer - '84 with about 7500 hours. When I plowed with it I loved it. It has been in the shop for about 1 1_2 months - transmission out. It started by wanting to jump out of medium range. It did not have to be under a load. It did it test driving but the dealer said they fixed it by adjusting the linkage. It did it a few times plowing, but then a lot and then quite. I hope to get it back next week. The job is going to run me close to $5k. They said this was uncommon and they really like these tractors. If it wants to jump out, I would check it very close.

Re 5488:A very good tractor.Things to look for tho.Was the speed transmission ever updatedIJIJAlso we've seen some camshaft lobe wear problems with these units. The tractor is very similar to a CIH Magnum series tractor. We have many of these units in our trading area with over 10,000 hrs on them. we have one the steering is very hard to steer not as easy as other tractors. Also some times under the floor board a value gets juck in it and the steering goes out. I don't like the why the clutch works some times you push the clutch in and out and you don't go any place you have to get the light on dash to go out first. I would look for a used magnum if I were you they are a lot better. But if you have your heart set on a 5488 I have one.

Parttimer, the switches are on the speed lever.Sometimes when you go to like 3 to 4 it wont switch over to 4 but the lever is in 4.Just clean up the switch with electric cleaner. Before you go down the road turn the mfd switch to the off position. It DOES NOT turn off by itself. It ruins the splines on the shaft which is under the oil pan or ruins the hub.Im sorry my prices were wrong,150$ for the shaft and 200$ for the hub.We pull a 5 shank dmi disk ripper with it, and plant with it.There is a picture of it on this web site.It is the last picture added.
