Combines Info on 1640 or 1660

A 1640 would be a perfect choice for 4-38" and 15' Now If he is thinks he might want to move up to 6-30" or 6-38" corn and 20' bean head. Then he might consider a 1660.

Would not consider the 1640 because of the conditions he is farming in. The 60 will have a MUCH heavier drivetrain. look at one side by side and decide which final drive you want on a hill with a tank full of grain. Agree that the 1640 might be better matched for the head size but hills take power too and the 40 will likely run out.

You're right. I miised the Hill part of the post. I'd look at '94 after 44'sand66's They both have heavier Drivetrains. I would not turn a 1640 down if it was a good price. with the large finger seives and a four row head you can run 5+ mph all day.

Hilly conditions alone would warrant the 1660 over the 1640 for sure both for power and drivetrain. Some 1640's had a turbo charged engine and they were much better.

Our 1644 is a 94 model and still has the light final drives and transmission so the change over to the heavy drive train must have taken place sometime during the 1994 production run.

I run a 6 row (30") on a 1440. last year we had good corn (175_bu_a). As long as the corn is dry, no trouble running 3 MPH. Point being, a 1640 would handle a 6 row heard better than my 1440. My grain head is 15' ..... matches up to machine good.
