what combine are you running on the headIJ most models have a drop-rate adjustment on the combine, not the header.

I do not doubt that most combines have a drop rate control. But, I am confidant an 83 Massey Ferguson 860 lacks that feature.

you can get a burden's surplus center catalog and get a check valve for the line since it sounds like there isn't one. look at all of them, some are adjustable. Do you use a header tilt (field tracker_contour master) on your 860IJ gs

Do you use a header tilt (field tracker_contour master) on your 860IJ lolthat is a good one! ;-) I do not think a check valve is a solution to the problem. like I said, the reel slams down when the reel is lowered. We do not experience this problem with the Massey headers. We just need to plumb a restrictor into the line somewhere between the reels lifting cylinders and the hydraulic coupler. I am just curious if anyone would have a good estimate of the reels weight so I do not have to figure it up or weigh it in some other manner. Then I can size the orifice correctly.

I meant to say a restrictor and not check valve, sorry. I know you can get an adjustable one from the surplus center in lincoln,Ne. because I did for another project. They have a knurled knob right on the valve to adjust the rate of drop. My question about the field tracker was a serious one. I guess you do not have one. My neighbor with an 860 and a 9120 does. gs

Are you sure about the field tracker on your neighbors 860 MasseyIJ I believe they had a float option, but I never knew about any type of field tracker, terrain tracer, contour master, or whatever you want to call it. I have never seen anything listed about it in the parts manual, which we have been through from front to backtwice! If there is one available for a price under 10% of the machines value, which would figure out to around $100 dollars, then I would be interested in finding one.

I have seen it in action, and I agree the whole machine's value is pretty much what it will weigh at the junk yard. Too bad. gs
