Back in 94 when I was running an l3 I hired a neighbor with a 9600 to help finish my corn. He had been doing the same variety so there was no need for much adjusting. I was very impressed with his clean sample until the following year when the field he did was full of volunteer corn. Any machine will give a clean sample if it blows half the crop out the back end. for that down rice and other green material we have had real success with steep pitch heilicals over the thresher grate, extending the heilical over the upper lh inlet area, and the four bar paddle replacement along with the cut paddle extended bars_cut back paddles on 4 (every other row) .

In all fairness, the Gleaners will do that too... I think an R-72 will blow rocks out the back if you could get em in there! Give me a Gleaner over anything anyday. Half of how well a combine performs is in the operator...but, some combines seem to have "genetic" so to speak advantages over others. Out of curiosity, how did your l3 stack up (speed,capacity, threshing, all that jazz) to his 9600IJ

Bad weather was closing in and I was just relieved to have someone pick the last of the corn so I didnt really pay any attention to how fast he was going. Everything looked good until the next summer when we had to spray volunteer corn in beans where the 9600 did the picking. In general, we have a relatively short window for combining and plowing etc. If we take too much time to get it right, we might end up finishing the following spring. The usual motto is, a poor job in the fall is always better than an excellent job the next spring. Tom in MN
