We arranged the knives on our 8780XP in the spiral pattern this year. I believe it helps to move green stemmed beans through the rotor better. It also seems to help with cob breakage in corn. We have had problems with cob peices in the sample in years past but didn't have any trouble at all this year. Give it a try and see what you think. It's not that difficult to do. We started at the front of the rotor with one knife. Rotate the rotor down past the rasp bars and install the next knife in the next slot back. Keep doing this all of the way back on the rotor. When you get to the end of the rotor it will be necesary to install two knives side by side to maintain good rotor balance. You should have 14 knives installed total. As for rotor speed in corn we run from 280 to 350 rpm. In soybeans it varies quite a bit with conditions. Usually 500 to 600 rpm.
