Al, the metal curtain is installed as a crop deflector. The high air blast from the thresher beater lifts the curtain somewhat and the intention is to deflect the the material other than grain and a small portion of grain to land on the raddle just before the end. On lower rpm cyl settings such as corn and soybeans the shield should be raised and locked. This allows the material to be moved farther back. Big help in hillside operation. In soybeans especially, this helps prevent backfeeding of the thresher raddle. You said you had trouble wrapping. Was this the thresher beaterIJ In 99% of the cases of wrapping the thresher beater the cause is either too great a cyl. clearance or worn bars. We, in soft red winter wheat and corn and soybeans have had no adverse reaction to removal of the metal curtain. Not so in hard red and other grains. Reason is tremendous amount of straw we injest with the wheat down here. We are wet here with 40% corn planted in W. Tn _ Ky. Many acres deverted from wheat and corn to soybeans. $$$ and cheap insurance that pays is the reason.
