Combines l2 Feeder Beater problem

The only thing i can tell you is that in wheat i have had a problem with the beater plugging and it is a pain because the machine does not have a reverser. I finally fought it for about 3 years and replaced both halves of the slip clutch and it has not plugged since. I think what happens is the ears on the clutch gears get worn and then it does not have enough surface area to drive and it plugs too easily. If you have more questions email me. Good luck Brent

Your feeder beater problem could very well be the result of a poor feeding head. If your head is feeding large slugs of beans, then that is the place to start remedying the situation. Make sure your sickle is cutting smoothly, your reel is pulling the beans into the header conveyor, and your conveyor is moving beans into the feeder house evenly. If any of those steps isnt going smoothly, you will continue having problems until you correct them. Evaluate your bean head with these problem areas in mind and let us know what you figure out. Your problem could very well be your feeder beater but my hundreds of years experience running l and M series machines say otherwise. HundredsIJ Well not really, but a plugging feeder beater makes it seem like that many.

You have a very good point. With a wheat head it is crucial that the head does not gather up bunches of the crop you are harvesting. Sometimes a sander and some good car wax will make the crop flow more smoothly is the header platform has rust in the auger trough. I have not had experience with Beans but i know it is that way for other crops. Thanks for beinging that up! Brent

Remember, every time you plug the feeder beater, it will be even weaker the next time!!!This is because the thrust washer(s) on the back side of the clutch assembly are slowly grinding their way into the brg lockcollar causing the clutch to move away from the springs making spring pressure less and less and less. Maintain proper air gap at spring end (5_16 ")and depending on model yr you can add springs up to 8 total. Also in my neck of the woods we always run feeder beater UP as far as it will raise for best performance in corn and beans-plugs a lot less when up. GOOD cyl bars are a must in green stem beans also.

Check you slip clutch on right hand side. If you had never heard it before this fall, chances are it is ok. You can have up to 8 springs inside the cluster. If you have 4, add 2 more and see if it pulls ok and so on. Keep in mind with 8 springs and a rock or somthing comes in you may break a finger off. Good luck

I don't know about these other comments. But I do know we had the same problem when we bought our first l-2. I don't remember if the feeder beater is supposed to be up or down in wheat, but it should be set the opposite for beans. If it is up in wheat, set it down for beans...

Think alot of my problem with feeding is with my reel setting. It has rained and I have not been able to get in field and try some adjustments. Thanks for all input !
