What you have heard is true, the 670 w_Roosamaster looks like a loaded coal locomotive going across the field. There is no good way to clean it up either as that is the nature of the beast. The N5_6's had the same engine and problem until they changed the injector pump and nozzles to an Ambac. The Ambac on the N's then were able to be slowed down on the N6 and still get 220 hp. The same was true for the 7000 to 8000 series tractors, with the Ambac pump they got more HP with less smoke. The 7060 and 7080 smoked bad with the Roosamaster and the 8050 and 8070 got close to the same HP with little to no smoke. Find a late N5 and pull the pump and nozzles and you will have 190 HP less the intercooler from the now 158 HP , they are both 2400 rpm machines, just don't burn the belts off.

That sounds like a pretty good idea...how new are we talking ('83, '84IJ) and pull a switcheroo and I got 190HP as compared to 158IJ Sounds scary though...I have bad visions of twisted shafts looming in my mind...

The series 3 had the Ambac pump in 82, I have one! Easy to see, open the back ladder door and look in at the pump on the engine. Have a local salvage yard that has atleast 2 N5's with Ambac. Probably right about the shafts!
