my l2 with that engine has 4000 plus on it, never had any major problems, my m2 with the 649t has about the same, i think both of those engines were the most reliable ac made. I guess it maybe depends on the maint they have had. You do seem to see some of them being overhauled around 3000 hrs though, again depends on the care.

Number one killer of that engine is cold starts with slow cranking engine and ether. Ether can break rings. Over heated engine at one time or another may show up years later. Cracked heads or blown head gaskets are first things to show up if overheated. Some operators will overheat combine continuously and others never. Other hidden problems in combine engines can be caused by cold revs and put under load to take sample then shut down ect. You see some combine engines get quite a testing and then the next is treated like a baby. Only way to be real sure about engine is if you ran it all the hours. I agree with others that this is the finest engine Allis ever made but its like any other as far as treating it properly. Smoke level usually isn't to bad on that motor if tuned up properly. Just replace all injector tips if it's been 2000 or 3000 hours. In about '79 they started using Bosch injector tips which cleaned up smoke some and then in '82 they started using Bosch pumps which cleaned up smoke alot more.
