The MF 540 is nearly identical to MF 300 in design, simple yet very functional.Very easy combine to work on, much easier to make repairs than on MF 550. Unloader drive a little light and requires attention - keep wet grain away from unloader bottom, as this will fail lower bearing causing gears to go out. These were an excellent, economical combine if they weren't pushed too hard. 318 Perkins engine known for head gasket failure. Rear beater shaft a little light, had a neighbour who broke his twice - cause can sometimes be grease on pulley sheaves, keep clean. Transmission 1st gear weak - again generally caused by pushing too hard in muddy conditions. 4 row corn head and 13ft head best size match, 15ft head possible - may require rear axle weights. Ok match for your acreage, as we have done that much with an MF 300. Good luck!
