oldstruck, how did you test the pads to see if they were registering an impulse IJI have the same problem with it not working and wondering where to start first. jl

Check your book on how to set the grain loss monitor. I believe (without looking) you have two knobs on your overhead monitor. One of them is to set the sensitivity for different grains (more sensitive for small grains, less for corn or beans) and the other one is to set your acceptable loss - in other words, you drive a ways, check your actual loss, and turn that knob until your needle is centered in the display going the same speed as you were before you checked if your loss is acceptable to you. As for these rotaries, I don't think too many people trust the loss sensor for the rotor. All it takes is for a piece of straw to get stuck in the cage touching that pad and it will give false readings. I don't think ours even works at all anymore. We just set ours to watch shoe loss rather than rotor or combination. I've always thought the rotor loss sensor should be placed under the grate below the discharge beater too rather than the stock placement. I'm thinking that you just need to tweak your sensitivity if you have already proven that the pads are working. Yes, they look "tucked under" the back of the shoe, but they do work in that position once you get everything set right. That, and set it to read show loss only - if your rotor loss sensor has quit working, it will cause your total loss to be lower than actual.

Great! I played with this some this afternoon in wheat. I am starting to figure it out i think. I am now wondering if I may have not been going fast enough on ground speed last fallIJ In wheat I can get a reading on the meter, so I started to keep track on a sheet a paper of what I am doing. I am fighting the tendency of trying to set it like in the 1660 we had, and I am finding they dont operate quite the same. thank you!

All I did was turn the combine on (not started) then had my summer worker tap the pads with a pencil. I would watch the meter as he did this and would adjust the sensitivity up and down. Doing this we got an idea of what we should be looking for on getting started setting this. Which should change from crop to crop and harvesting conditions. I would like to use it to help me keep the threshing system full so hopefully that will help us keep more grain in the machine. Some of my issue is me, I have been ingrained using an IH grain loss unit and this one, to me anyway, looks at grain loss in a different way. We did find one pad did have a bad connection right at the eye loop on one wire. We think it would work with the machine just sitting in the shop, but once the threshing system was in gear it would only make irratic connections and maybe that is where we were having a problem. I found how to check them on this web site. I think it was postedabout a year and a half ago. The manual is kind of vague, or I just dont read very well! This website has sooooooo much information! Sometimes it just takes a bit of time to sift through it to find it.
