Combines looking at a 1460

Those 2 should make a nice combination. Currently have a 84 1460 with a 20 foot bean platform. In good dry beans the combine handles it just fine, 3.5 to 4mph. In green stem beans you'll have to pull back on the stick a little.Trouble is feeding in wads and getting the wads up through the throat. In corn a 1460 handles a 6 row head beautifully. Check the unit over closely. That's low hours for an 81. I'm guessing they'll ask 10K or more for the combine, would guess the head at somewhere in the 7500 to 9000 range.

I have a 1983 1460, 20 foot grain head 4.5 mph in dry 50 bu. beans, 8 row 30 inch corn head dry corn 3 to 3.5 mph . they are a good dependable machine.Rock trap will give you problems in green beans, will not feed right. If you dont have a rock problem you can pull off feeder house and cover rock trap opening with a piece of flat steel. This is what I did and solved all feeding problems.

I have a 1440 with a 1020 15' head that's a good match. I also run a 6 row corn head with no problem. The only down side to the std rotor and the 14 series machine is in green beans. A lot of pounding to get them through the rotor. But, with that low of hours, I would purchase in a heat beat.

As for the 1460 rock trap problems, I also had problems with green stemmed beans when I had the 1460. The cure was simple. I converted the original 4 bladed rotor to the current 3 blade rock trap rotor. No more problems at all with the rock trap limiting capacity, back feeding and wrapping. The other thing that made a difference is when I had it converted to a specialty rotor. That made a lot of difference. With the 1660 I have now there are no problems with the rock trap or specialty rotor. The only thing that happens is rotor rumble when trying to continue after a good dew has fallen. They tell me the Stewart Steel Axceller auger front to replace the elephant ears is the solution. I would like to try that setup as it looks like it would work.

George, any tips or hints about the conversionIJ Is there a kit available to go to the 3 blade setup. Do you have to change speeds of the trapIJ Thanks in advance.

806: No there isn't a kit. You just buy the beater for the 1660, part number 1319834C1 beater and 3 blades 1324438C1. Also have to buy a bunch of small bolts. It made a big difference for me. The rock trap on my 1460 was installed in 1985, the first year they came out with the feed reverser and they were put on together. My 1460 was a 1981 model. Incidentally you can still buy a brand new rock trap assembly but some of it is individual parts. I did not change the sprocket and it worked well. If you think about it the early 1660 was just a late 1460 with an updated chopper, specialty rotor,rock trap and feed reverser in our area. The 1985 model 1460 had these options available from the factory and the only improvement on the early 1986 1660 was getting the air intake screen off the side to a more protected spot, and a better laid out cab controls.
