Combines looking for Colin R72

Dan a few years ago I was at a combine school where a chief Gleaner engineer was talking. He told us of a gleaner they had tested with 500 hp. It was a 72 and he did mention the electric clutches slipped in corn. If I remember correctly the engine was shipped to them by mistake with that hp setting but they decided to try it out.

Sorry I took so long getting back,was away for the holiday's. I will tell you what we have done with my dads 72 that has the C-12 in it as as well as my two machines. First with dad's he is at 430 hp, and all we did to his was tighten the spring tension on the drives, and beefed up the slip clutches. The elctro magnetic clutches we left stock. Dad dose not have varible feeder house on his. So were the double belt drives the house we added an onther double wide pulley, this gives us 4 belts instead of the two belts, this helps in heavy canola swathes.this is the scend yr with this bad boy and we have not any problems. My two machines have the M-11 turned up two 430 too match the kitty cat. One machine is left stock except for tighteng the springs and slip clutches. The other one we pulled the main drive shaft out of it and replaced it with one that is about an other inch bigger in diameter. We even added bigger bearings and had the shives and clutches bored out to except the bigger shaft.

We did this one as an experament, to see if the bigger shaft's will eliminate the flexing and twisting of the shaft's. When putting it all back together we incressed the voltage to the clutches, so there is no sliping. All three machines have been hyped up, so they were hungry before we up the hp, now they are making full use of the extra hp. We have been working on the feeding issue this fall and think we have it solved. We even tried staight cutting canola with 42 feet and we had no problem. Colin

Colin, If I may, 2 questions re your R 72 with the Cummins engine. First, did you have to change injectors and engine program to upgrade powerIJ If so, to whatIJ Second, did you have to upgrade the cooling systems to dissipate the heatIJ Thank you, Jack

Yes I did change the rad, we had a local rad shop build use three custom rads for the three machines. As for the horse power change I used to work for cummins as a tech. So i still had all the computer software. I did not change the injectors but i did change the turbo's out to bigger ones. colin

I have not had any trouble with clutches slipping with stock power but have heard of guys adding a relay near clutch to eliminate the voltage drop threw the switch, safty module, ect. I can see where wiring in a double brusholder used on small rotaries would up the voltage to clutches by at least a volt. Is that similiar to what you didIJ We have our very first R62-72 that needs mainshaft pulled now. We have only lost a bearing hear and there which we just slaped in a new one and let her go. This machine we need to pull shaft on now come from an auction and never had been to our shop. The large nut on right side of shaft was surely loose which allowed bearing to erode away shaft until it snaped. What sort of failure did you see with standard mainshaft and how much HP do you think the standard one can take as long as there hasn't been parts compromised by running large nut or bolt looseIJ Did you need to stiffen cylinded belt torque senser spring or will it hold with the extra poniesIJ Do you know at what HP and outside temp that a clean standard radiator is not enough to keep her coolIJ Now just like Columbo (one more thing). What sort of trick did you have for feederIJ Thanks again

R72, I was thinking of putting in a larger main shaft in my R62 with the air diesel and I am curious if you keep track of the costs for the shaft, bearings and machine work and if you did what was the total costIJ Thank you ---big one

We added another brush holder which gave us about 1-2 volts more, this makes the clutches very strong. We never had a shaft falure, but we did see that it was twisting. I think the stock shaft will beable to take up 450 hp before breaking(this is only 2and season at the 430 mark)so we will sea as the seasons go on. We left the spring alone, and we have not seen any belt falure yet. The rad that comes in the 72 are good for about 350_375 in about 32 degree C. If you start incressing hp on the stock rad there is not enough cooling fins to take the heat away and as out side temp increses the coolant system is under a load all ready from the extra hp. I am not sure what you mean by tricks for the feeder house. Now for the cost of the shaft it is hard to tell we own a lathe and a milling machine and did are own work. I will have to get the exact cost from dad. Hope this help evry one if not just ask. Colin

Dear R 72, Regarding the radiator upgrade, in what dimension have you increased the size of the modified radiatorIJ Is it larger in area or is it thicker with more tubesIJ Could you give me more understanding of what is involved, pleaseIJ Thank you. Jack

You had said you were working on feeding issue and that you thought you had it solved. I was just wondering what you may of done to improve feeder capacity other than fill slip clutches with springs. I was snooping on another site awhile back and I saw you were talking about taking in double swaths. Would you expand on that. Thanks again.
