Combines looseness in rotor drive line

Just finished doing that job on my brothers' 1460. Went out to change a rotor belt for him and found an extreme ammount of slack in the spline you mentioned. It's not fun getting that chopper box outa there unless you have a real high place to hoist it from. We took it out in pieces ie. taking the drive pulleys and sheaves off before lifting the gear box out. To save time we found an entire gear box at a wrecker and installed a new drive sheave (with the splines in it). Had to drive a long way to get one though - hard to find a wrecker that will sell just the gear box. My advise is don't let it go completely on you cause it takes more parts with it. Have some one that knows how to re-align the rotor sheaves do that for you so you don't create a rotor belt problem. Good luck

May I ask what lyou considered an extreme amount of slack. Mine is probably more that it is just noticeable. I am going to check it everyday. I can be done this week. Can the splines be rebuiltIJ thanks

This one had at least 2- 3" of free play at the outer edges of the drive sheave. After it was apart there was prctically no spline left in the sheave and the shaft spline was probably 50% gone. I don't know if it would have lasted another hour in the field. He's doing canary seed right now and real glad we got that fixed. As for reparing the spline if you have the time and it's cost effective I'm sure someone at a good machine shop could help you out.
