Combines lost the cummins in my 1680

What do you mean by "let go"IJ Are you sure it's not the engine oil coolerIJ Did it stop running or did you get an alarm and shut it downIJ

While combining, it started having lack of power, then the rpms really dropped off and went dead. white smoke. water in the oil althought not a great lot over the full line. I have not run 1_2 hr after I changed the oil at the end of harvest last fall. I shut it down, not wanting an oil fire in a wheat field. Then coolant blew out the over overflow. There was enough back pressure to blow the dipstick out. I have not tried to turn it over since. I have been busy getting the 140 bu of wheat off (got it done) after pulling it to the shed. will work on geting the head off this morn using tracrot hyd on the lift cyls. Sorry for my typing, only 4 hrs of sleep last nite and heading out the door to unload the wheat a neighbor cut for me Thank you

I am afraid you have major problems inside your engine. The 8.3 liter Cummins engine has a different counterbore and o-ring configuration than other wet sleeve engines and an o-ring leak allowing the coolant to leak into the oil is highly unlikly. Since you say the engine lost power, died, and then smoked white, my guess is that you scored a piston. When a piston gets scored, it expands in some spots and puts extra pressure on the sleeve. The sleeve can crack and allow coolant to run into the oil. The solution is to overhaul the engine with new sleeves and pistons. I am in favor of saving money, but this is one situation where paying someone experienced with removing combine engines would be the safest thing to do. Beside being able to lift the engine, you must be able to move the engine toward the radiator in order to uncouple the engine from the separator housing. The engine must then be moved off the back of the combine and lowered to the floor. If the engine drops, it gains a lot of speed before it hits the floor. It sounds like you have had some bad luck. That doesn't sound good. If you could get your wheat cut without this machine, I think I would try to do that even if it means renting a machine. We had a CIH dealer remove the engine from our 1680 a couple years ago to inspect the lower end. Just preventative maintenance. After they got done, it would break the oil filter housing every 100-110 hours due to vibration. We talked to everyone we could get to listen (dealers, factory, pump shops, Cummins, etc.) and nobody could tell us why this was happening. We even replaced the harmonic dampner, which was supposed to be the most likely problem. The dealer that did the work swore up and down that his guys did this all the time and it was no big deal. He absolutely refused to admit any responsibilty. Finally, after three broken housings we had a different CIH dealer pull the engine again to find out what was wrong. They couldn't find anything in the engine, so moved on to the PTO where they found the shaft was bent. In my opinion, the first mechanic must have pulled on the engine so hard with the hoist that they bent the shaft. That cost us a few thousand $, not to mention having to hire some wheat cut while we waited on parts. I guess this doesn't have a lot to do with your situation, except to point out that pulling this engine might not be so easy. I would not want to try to rush through it during harvest. I asked a neighbor yesterday to bail me out. His son came over and cut the 20 ac field last nite (runtill 10) after he filled his truck. Then today after finishing theirs, he came over and cut my 30 acre field. Finished the last half of the last round in the rain. I am very grateful for their help. ON to my machine. I have a reman engine ordered at a reccommended dealer a little farther away than the nearest. Unfortunately they aren't involved in all Case Credit options I have used in the past but I can get it worked out. As soon as possible (which may still be a week) I going to start removing tin work to begin the huge (for me) progect. I have a large piece of 1_4" box steel that I may have made into a boom extension for more reach for the loader that I will have to borrow. I will have to take my time as I will be by myself most of the time. btw, this is the 2nd engine I had go down. The mechanic still doesn't have the 4wd back together from last March. It's got to get better *WARNING* I will be back with questions to accomplish this job that I don't do all the time.
