If you harvest any pulse crops or anything short you should do ok with the 972 macdon with c-shaped cutterbar. Other draper fronts ( including the 962 macdon) either have a raised knife that you can't get anywhere near the ground, or have an upright about an inch high that beans etc are supposed to somehow magically jump up and over before they get anywhere near the draper. Beans, peas or whatever just sit there all day falling out onto the ground. light crop fingers will help marginally but the loss is still pitiful.

We have been running 962 MacDon's for two years on our Deeres and going to put them on our CATs this year. A draper head enhances feeding so much versus an auger head that you can run the same speed with a 36' foot draper as you do with a 30' auger head while cutting 6 feet more. The suspension on the MacDon's lets us cut terrases better with these 36 footers than we could before with 25 foot rigids. While moving to another field we set the MacDon's on their wheels and pull them behind the combines. They also cut very low to the ground. We cut about 700 acres of soybeans with them last fall on halfway level ground. On real level ground like a flood field they cut even lower than our old row heads did. Our customers are very pleased. I think the maintenance is very easy. Our headers have been used before we bought them. We still had little break downs and if so they were always easy to fix. In addition MacDon provides a harvesting service that is second to none. It never took long from a phone call till the service truck showed up in the field. They also have been very helpfull in our first year of learning and experiencing. Over all the MacDon's are the best piece of equipment we own. We would and have changed the colors of our combines but the grain headers have to be black.

For our conditions and straw last year, we were travelling 3.5 to 4.5 mph on average
