I have an 1163. The main thing on the Massey head is , Stalk Roll timing. Most of the plugging, and pushing is caused by the stalk rolls not being properly timed. Next would be the cast Stars, located just behind the spiral points. If these are worn bad, then you get a lot of pushing. Other wise if kept in good order a good running head. To me the weak point is the stalk roll carriers. They should have been heavier. Just be sure to greas the drive boxes, and that helps a lot.Oh, another annoyance is the gathering chains have a tendency to jump off. Some seasons I can go with only happening a couple of times. the next I will stop twice a day. HTH Joe

Did they time the rolls different, when the switched from the offset angle iron style replacement knives (63_83) series to the double bend style of knife like the (1163_1183)runIJ I do not have a 1100 series book to explain the proper timing but I have fought an 83 a little more than previously I had an 84. I know the 84 had the timing spaced so the knives were equally apart from each other, my 83 is timed one tooth closer together.... Seems that we always remembered the wide row head to feed a little better... Wide row had the high profile tin, my narrow has the newer low profile tin. Purchased an 1183 but have yet to run. Need to check its timing also, have new Sloan, Kooima knives on both.

Can't remember for sure if the timing on my 1163 is the same as tthe 63 was. Seems that it is , but can't remember what the 63s was. They are timmed the same way, I do know that! All I know is that, a worn set of properly timmed knives, will out do a new set of knives.I will look up the measurment, and post it later. On the 1100 series heads in addition to the lower tin, The snapping rolls were also at a lower angle. This made quite a difference in getting down corn, HTH Joe

Got my book, and found a older, non 1100 series book(24,33, 34---83).The measurement is the same as the non 1100 series 7_8 of an inch. timmed the same way. Joe
