There is a guy who modify's the 820 heads to cut alot closer but I haven't heard of anybody modifying the 1020's. If you look at the cutterbar on a 1020 straight on from the front you will see that the way the skid shoes are made the only way to get them to cut really close is to tip the head on it's nose which will hurt their feeding ability since it makes them pull the crop uphill into the auger. One of the key's to the Harvestmore head's ability to cut so close is the floor sheets and skid plates are very flat allowing the sickle to run very close to the ground.

Red Greene, can you explain why a new height sensor made a 1020 flex head cut closer and get a better tilt. Thanks, Rob

I can answer that question..he has replace the cable with a rod system that reflects the ground height a lot quicker. It attaches on the left side and may take 1-2 hours to install.

Is that the recent update they just came out with the past couple years NO more hafting to oil and work that at the beginning of the year and working that darn thing so it would work we leave both 1020's on a header trailor all the time in the off season and that doesn't help not sure what else you can do thou That update sure looks like it would work thou

I have done some things to mine that allow it to cut closer . The secret is as others have said , get it to cut lower with the knife flat and not tipped on its nose . I have customers who will only let me direct cut their white beans for them because I do cut so low . Send me an e-mail if you want more info as to what I did . Joe

How wide is your platformIJ Do you run a field trackerIJ Getting rid of that stupid cable is a the first place to start. Next I would make sure that the sensor rod that runs accross the plaform moves freely(there is a spring kit that goes on the right end). Check the springs on the outside ends and make sure they are tight enough and not broken. Then move onto the springs that support the flex cutter (they adjust from behind the platform),make sure none of them a broke and you want them tight enough so the head reacts to lift but not so tight that it is slow to drop down. If you want to really get into it you can try to figure out how to adjust the springs on the rowcrop dividers on the ends. The biggest adjustment for cutting height will be on the angle that you set your feederhouse at, you want it tipped down just right so that you don't push.

Good ideas mid-west.... One thing to add and really helps is to have a full finger auger. Best thing I did for even feeding and less reel speed to push the crop in. JK
