Machines with rotary threshing tend to chew up the straw as the crop makes multiple passes by the concave. However, rotary separation does not damage the straw. If you need to bale straw and want high capacity, a machine like the Claas_Cat(cylinder to thresh, rotor to separate) will probably be the configuration. Any cylinder _ walker machine will also work, but there is a limit to the capacity you can get.

It depends on the baler too. I had a JD 535 that wouldn't begin to touch straw from a rotary so I had my neighbor bale my straw with a JD 100 and it couldn't have worked any better. I traded the 535 off for a JD 457. These balers had bigger teeth, wider pickup, and a stuffer to help get the straw from the pickup to the rollers_belts. I can bale straw from a rotary combine. Baling straw from a rotary used to be a problem around here but I think the new balers on the market from any company can pretty much bale straw from a rotary combine. I know the local JD dealer sold 15 new 7 series balers the year they came out just because they could bale rotary straw. It also depends on what time of the day you were baling. Around here, baling in the middle of the day will do you no good. Instead you have to wait for evening or early in the morning when the straw is tougher.
