I'm no pro, and I've only cut wheat and a bit 'o mustard, but here's what I've learned: On a stock cage (P1 cylinder) in wheat, we weren't able to run with the cage sweep system disconnected. loewen Mfd (www.loewenmfd.com) makes a P3 style cage for the N series. Not sure of the price, I'm inquiring about that (tyler@loewenmfg.com is the person I've been talking to.) I only jammed the dist. augers if I ran too much material in there. If jams are happening, you may be breaking the crop up too much, and instead of going out the back of the combine, it's running back up into the accelerator rolls again. Slow the cylinder_open up the concave, and maybe close down the top sieve if your not loosing too much grain. We put stands in the grain tank that holds the auger up about 1_2" from the "full bin" switch, keeps the u-joint on that auger from wearing out as fast.

Yes, loewen does manufacture P3 style cages to fit the P1 style early combines which allows you to then take out the cage sweep. They have the larger 1 x 1 1_4 holes, only 1 door on the seperator so you won't have the straw buildup on all the doors you had before. For the thresher cage, you just pull your doors and install these new doors with the larger 1 x 1 1_4 holes, but just investing in the new P3 style seperator cage will already give you a much improved thresh, and no worry about straw buildup and clean out.
