Combines N series corn head

Are you aware that there are 2 different N cornheadsIJ With 2 different mountings. The early model was not too good of a design, the later ones were much better and would fit the Series 3 and later on into the R series. My Ser3 N6 takes the later and will take the new hugger(mounts are the same). look at the mounts on a hugger and the one you are looking at and make sure it will fit your machine. Also the Ser3 has what they call the "long throat" which is the newer head hookup.

Recently went to an auction and saw a 6 row head that was used on a '82 N5 Series 3. It was in really good shape, probably an 7.5-8 on a 10 pt scale. It ended up selling for $2000. The combine sold for $6700 and 20' platform sold for $1200.

It is an series 2 header which is what my N6 is an 80. I knew that there were differences with the series 3 headers but i guess i thought it would be worth pursuing, we plan on going to 22in rows and would need a 30 in to still do some of the neighbors corn, would make the 643 a 22in head and do earlage and corn with it on our place. Do the series 2 corn head not feed all that wellIJ looks like it would go down at a good angle for hard to get corn. Never seen a hugger head so cannot compare, but understand they run in a oil bath like the deere. Just wondering how much upkeep with all that chain and slipclutch under there. Old friend of mine ran orange headers on M and l and always said just put some oil or chain lubricant on at night when you shut down, and not much trouble. Only do about 350-500 acres a year of corn depending on what the neighbors plant. Input appreciated. Willis Kinder Bliss, Idaho
