Have a 89 630R head on a 84 model N5.When I bought the head told them what it was going on so if they changed anything I don't know what it was unless it was the upper plate in the head.On the grain heads some have their on hyd pump with just electric hook ups, others have the hose hook up and use the combine hyd. Not sure about anything else.

The difference I found is that there is a series two and a series three. The series two is the early series which will not fit the R series combines without changing feeder housings, or lots of modification to the head. The series three which I believe came out in '83 will fit all head that came out after that year. The series two has a round tube on top of the head were it hooks up, and the series three has a rectangular hook up on the top. The series three heads will fit R series combines.

Yes a '82 or newer series 3 rotary combine head will fit onto latest machines. Some prior to '82 grain heads have had major kit installed to adapt it to '82 or newer feeder housings. Corn heads were much easier to convert. As of '04 the bolt on feeder house mounts will stand alot taller on standard feeder to match the lateral tilt setup headers and feeders that are becomeing very popular. These taller mounts would have to be switched to short ones to mount old head on new machines. During the build of R40,50,60,70 1989.5 they installed the hydralics for reel or pickup on the combine. You can run old head on newer combine by adding the wires to combine to control reel speed or installing a hydralic package to use newer combine hydralics to run older head. To run newer head on older combine you need to install pump kit onto head. We switched many heads both ways in early '90s and still do some today. There are certainly other things like auto reel speed, auto header height, Max lift of feeder ect. that can make a difference so you will need to get specific and see what dealer suggests.
