Combines N5 a dealIJ

Do you plane to use the n5 for parts or to runIJ Would it be easier to take parts off your n6 and put on the n5IJ Cage job, is a big job we bill 40 to 50 hour of labor to install a cage kit from AGCO, depending on how many extras and fab work we have to do in the processor. Im not sure what other dealers bill out to do a cage job but I know it take more than 40 hours to do.. I you do it right... Even more if you make any mod's....

I have thought of that but the N6 has more capacity and horses. I like my N6 in corn because of the extra grain capacity. Not sure what the N5 is like because I have never run a 5 before. My N6 is a prettier machine but I guess that isn't what really matters.

N5 has 1 overfeed auger, N6 has 2 doubling your capacity. N5 has blocked off_smaller rotor area than the N6_N7 again reducing your capacity. N6 and N7 difference is engine size and grain tank size. N5 and N6 share the same 670 aka 426cid engine but 30hp less in the 5 and the 5 is an all around smaller machine. After owning a 6 as I do and knowing the differences and mine is a Hyper'd 6 I would and have put my dollars into it to keep it going. If you have a loader tractor and some mechanical knowledge you can do most of the cage and Hyper work yourself and the lower end of the engine I had done this past fall for under $1500.

Iam currently doing a cage job on a N6. It is not to bad of job, but we are also replacing all bearings on dist. augers , front and rear feed chains and bearings and elevator chains. We are installing a p3 cage with a 13 bar concave, steep pitch channel helicals, no seperater concave (all of the cage was bought from lowen Mfg.) and a modified p3 cylinder out of a R62. By the time we are done he will have a $20,000 bill on it (45.00 per hour shop rate). We are also going to put in the new style rock door. The customer decided That if he traded up to an R50 it would cost about twice as much and still have nearly the same hour machine.

Willis, Sounds like the N5 has had new life breathed into it's lungs.For the 6 grand,you can't go wrong.Check the final drives between the two.(If they are both S36,they are the same.)Both the 81' N5 and the 80' N6 have the same hydro.Add 8" of grainbin extention,now the grain bins are the same.Remove the two blanks on the thresher cage side and install a couple of used cage doors,now your cage and rotor are the same.(leave the overfeed auger and trough out and let the excess grain,what little there is,fall back into rear feed conveyor.This is just another auger,trough and bearing to wear out and cause cage sweep problems.)Do the Hyper mods. and the HP difference won't be an issue.(Don't know who told you about the cranks but,all N5 and N6 cranks are the same whether it is a 670I or 670HI.) Thanks for all the folow-ups guys. I got started on removing the cage yesterday. Pulled the rotor and will go ahead and put in shop and pull out the other misc. to pull the cage. Talked to a dealer in North Idaho and said with just basic knowledge of the machine i could probaly pull the cage in 8-10 hours. I feel more condident in putting the other parts in my machine because I know it. I know they are similiar, but a guy doesn't know all the quirks and problem a machine has until you run it. My machine i know and know what I have done to it. Besides what else can you do in the shop all winter. Put a bid in on buying the neighbors place, may be glad I fixed up the 6 if we get it.
