Hi Clark, I used to have an 81 N-5 and it was a little sweetheart.(I kinda wish I still had it) Don't be afraid of the age as long as it has the required updates and you keep it in good running order. If you do this it will be just as reliable as the newer ones. I have an 80 N-7 and an 83 and the 80 is by far my favorite. I ran a 24 ft grain head on my N-5 and it worked fine in wheat.(don't know about barley, never raised it) As far as the engine rpm, the 5's were already running slower than the 6's so it shouldn't be a problem. One thing I did to mine was to replace the blank cage doors on the thresher cage with perferated doors to add some seperation area. As far as the updates, if you have the time, go through the prior posts. There is a vast amount of knowledge to be had here. Good luck!! DAB
