Hello daffy, I'm now sure, but I think that 85 was the last year for the N-6. I thought they went to the R 5 6 7 in 86, but I've been wrong before. Anyway, things to check: 1. Check the cage (worst wear will be in the center where the two halves bolt together) 2. Check cylinder bars, helicals, and concave. 3. Check accelerator rolls,(make sure they are the bolt on style) 5. Check distribution augers and the troughs for wear. 6. Check both feeder chains and all sprokets,(see if chains have been running straight) 7. look for wear and holes in both feeder floors,(seems like the area under each drum is the worst) 8. Check all the auger flighting,( clean grain, tailings, bin loader, and bin unloader) 9.Check both elevators,(look at chains, make sure housings aren't bulged or worn through) 10. Check gearbox,(look for leaks, make sure it is tight, run it if you can and listen for noises) 11. Check cleaning fan,(sometimes they come loose and get a twisted look to them) 12.Check the bin floor and unloader elbow area 13.Check the main shaft and machine clutch 14.Run and listen to the engine, transmission, and the hydro,(make sure you have good oil pressure and not too much blow by) I'm sure I have forgotton some things, but hopefully some of the other guys will respond who know a lot more about these machines than I do. None of the items that I listed are a big deal to replace, as long as everything isn't shot and the price reflects what problems it might have. If you get the machine there is a huge amount of knowledge on this site that will help make it dependable, high capacity machine! Hope I have helped DAB

Still a good machine! Most of the updates were done and in the machines in the 1982 Series 3 N's. They had a couple minor changes after that, but if it was owned by a good operator, it got those updates too. Starting in 82 all the N's were built heavier, the next serial n break for changes was 7301, 82 started with n5101. The only way to tell my 82 apart from an R6 is to put them side by side or cheat and look at the R6 on the side. Good luck!
