If I remember right the throats didn't get a major change until 1998.You could get a adaptor to bolt in grainhead to fit older throats but it is usually hard to find a used one and cost prohibitve going new. We have changed several early style short throats to the longer 82' and up to R60 long throats. So a grainhead from a 97' or prior machine should fit the longer thraot. Have paid $500 for one from salvage yard. Some will be bare throat and some will be complete for this price. If throat is bare you will have to lengthen feeder chain and you will need drive belts for both sides. Yes, you can bolt pump and drive from older header to run reel. I don't believe a R62 throat will fit a N6 without some modification (Haven't tried this yet.). Hopefully this helps answer your question, Hyper Harvest II

I don't know if this will answer the question completely, but we have an 02 R72 that can still run a 70's vintage head only change was to change hydraulics to opposite of what you need. We originaly used this head on an 84 N6 and still have it around. So I would assume the header fom newer would likely go back to the N6.

We ran N5's 80 and 81. Header hook up was changed I think in 82. So I would say you will have a problem hooking them up with out a torch and wielder. look for a used feeder house and change over. You will add a lot more years to your N6.

I am currently running a 27ft 700 head on a 1979 N-6 for past 3 years. I have switched 3 other 1979-1981 N-6 combines to series III feeder housings. I installed the original pump on the 700 header and built a PTO shaft drive to drive the pump (that takes care of any misalignmet). E-mail if need more information at conardd@msinter.net
