jbull, Springs are the same for early and late serial numbers. We add or remove shim washers to acheive a spring dimension of 2 5_8" when retaining bolt is tight. Hyper Harvest II
When retaining bolt is tight my spring measures 2 3_8" which is fully compressed. I only have the two thin washers that the book shows. Even if I remove both it will not be enough and then the hub would directly on the bearing. Any ideasIJ John
There should be a thin hardened washer next to bearing and then a thrust washer in front of thin washer. We remove grease zerk from hub to prevent grease from entering the slip clutch. Just take clutch apart once a year and apply grease to bushing and thrust washers. Then add whatever amount of washers under head of spring retaining bolt to acheive 2 5_8"-2 3_4". We have some that are running two 1_2" lockwashers under head of bolt. Hyper Harvest II
I think I'm following you now. At first I thought you were removing the thrust washers. There are no washers under the head of the retaining bolt at this time. The lock washers would be inside the spring, correctIJ Thanks for you quick and detailed reply. John
Yes, whatever amount of shim washers needed to achieve spring dimension. Make sure that bolt is long enough to catch at least 3_4" worth of thread in shaft. Hyper Harvest II
I took apart the slip clutch assembly to grease the thrust washers and found some of my problem. When I replaced the hub and put in the new bushing I swelled one end of the bushing once this was corrected everything fit fine. Thats what happens when working one things in the back of the shed with poor light. Thanks for your help. John
