I got a bit misty eyed when i read down wheat cause i can hardly remember the last time i had that problem in our dry ol country Oz. However i remember crop lifters helping as they shorten the straw length and quiting as the tough night air comes on and hooking in through the warmer part of the day . Thats about all i know . My N-6 does the same thing in certain conditions. I hear the chain hitting the top of the feed house which often dislodges the inspection door there. When I replaced the chains, a few years ago, there were strippers for the sprockets that because of my infinite wisdom did not replace. I have blamed my troubles on those worn out sprocket strippers ever since. The only difference between us is that my trouble is just stuff wrapping on the sprockets and not the entire feedhouse filled with straw. Yours might also be a problem with second chain not good at grabbing straw.

I was having the same problem this year during startup and late in the evening. Neighbor asked if I could see the feeder house drum in the header area. If I was sitting on the combine could see the drum, my feeder chain was to long. We removed the header and released the tension on the front drum took out a full link from all 3 chains. This solved our problem. I have only had one plug since then. The other problem could be the condition or tension on the upper feed belt. If this belt is bad or slipping it will not remove all that is fed to it by the lower chain. let me know if this is not very clear. We are in SW OK.

I'm with the other guys on rear feed not keeping away from front feed. We have raised point at which rear feed tention belt spring hooks to tention arm. This helps prevent this belt from slipping. Rear feed slats should be sharp enough to pull material from front feed. Be sure of no obstructions at all in floor. loewen has shock kits for tention drums for these older machines. I'd install rear shock kit with drum stops set for MAX float. Your condition of tough straw and low feeder house angle creates most unfavorable angle of feed into or under rear feed tention drum. Shocks will help drum stabilize at a higher height promoting better transition. Good luck
