Combines N6 separator clutch

N6_7 are known to have main clutch_cross shaft problems. Many break and mine bent causing your exact symtoms. Noise and tearing up the belts that are hooked to that shaft. The bend wasn't visable until we took it out and put it on the shop floor and watched it wobble. We took it out because we thought it was a bearing going out. Well, the wobble of the shaft did a job on the bearings too. A couple thousand dollars later with a new shaft and bearings, I am no longer replacing belts every couple days. It has run 5 seasons without a problem since. Just a note, but every main clutch shaft on the N6_7 in the 2 salvage yards I visit are either bent and noticable or broken. Replace the bearings and check that shaft when doing the job, bearings usually need to be torched off that shaft.

Check that the two shafts are aligned. That is that they are mounted in the combine in a perfectly straight line. No run out at the clutch. If aligned they are trouble free.

the brg is 120.00, the clutch plates are 220.00 each. If the nut was in place on the end of the shaft, how could the plate come off, and the shaft move outIJ

Make sure that the clutch plates jiggle freely by hand in all positions of a 360 degree rotation of the shaft. If they tighten on the pins in any part of the rotation you have a bent or misaligned shaft pairing. If you do a lot of hours it's a good idea to replace that spheroid bearing every two seasons.

Check the inside diameter of where the inside bearing goes (on the right hand shaft) If this is wallowed out you will eat the bearings every 200-300 hrs (maybe less) Take it to a good machine shop and have them put in a bushing that is a little tighter than factory.(factory replacement had lots of clearance, I think we used 3-4 thousanths for clearance)(cost me $100 rather than the $600+ the dealer wanted or $300 used) Pull out the seal off of the inside bearing on the grease zerk side, if you don't the seal will keep the grease out of the bearing just as good as it keeps dirt out.

Hy-Capacity remanufactures the clutch disks. can't remember the price, but was much cheaper than agco. Core charge was $7 each so don't worry about your old ones.

The entire left side shaft slipped out about 1_2". This let the fingers on the right side shaft slip out of one of the clutch plates that are on the left hand shaft.

I was talking to the parts man at the local dealer. He said that if the tapered piece that the outside pulley bolts to is not on far enough or tight enough it can allow the entrie left side shaft to slip out. Is this correct, or was there something else that I did not get back on properly that allowed the shaft to slip outIJ I do not think the shaft is bent.
