Combines N6 what is better chopper or impellerIJ

Impeller is better, chopper is too hard to keep in balance and shake the sheet metal apart in back of the machine.

I think the impeller is better. In situation with tough or wet straw, the swinging hammers on the chopper will swing back and won't grab the straw as well and can cause some choking at the chopper. Have heard of a fixed blade chopper that overcomes this problem, but can't remember who made it. It also a good idea to check the condition of the impeller paddles. When they wear down, the leading edge gets rounded and won't grab the straw to kick it on out. My thoughts anyway.

Troy I thought I would ask this question here. I got curious after your father in law started to tell me why he took the choppers out of the combines he had owned but he got started on a different subject. I am used to choppers on conventional combines where there is lots of room. The N combines amaze me because they have that huge rotor and such a small place for straw to exit. I realize that it works or they wouldn't still be using the design. p.s. Tell your father in law we found a trailer to bring the combine home. We just have to find time.

I like the chopper a whole lot better, I have a lot more trouble no-tilling corn behind a combine that doesn't have a chopper. I haven't had any trouble keeping our chopper in balance. I ran about a 1000 hours on the first set of blades, should of only ran 900 as I did lose a couple. I replaced them all this year before we started. It wasn't to bad of a job. Kurt

We have 2 N6's, one for corn and one for beans. The chopper is is what I like. We have in the past fought with bean straw in the spring and not any more. This year I turned the stationary knive for the first time in maybe 5 years @ 500 acres per year. They come with a flat edge on them so I sharped them. What a difference that made. Get the chopper and sharpen the knives.
