Combines N7 Steering

My 84 N7 was doing the same thing when I bought it. I jacked it up and greased it several times before it fixed the problem.

I doubt your '84 had dual steering cylinders. With the single cylinder you have more displacement in base end of cylinder thus more help steering the one way. You may be doing your steering with just standby pressure. Pressure to steering cylinder should come up to 2500PSI when steering hard. If low on pressure it could be a few things. I would hold header lift button to top of stroke to see if it helps. That would bring system up to pressure another way. I would then check power steering relief valve seat to see it isn't cracked or broke (I believe the '84 still had the very long relief valve spring and seat like older machines). Then there is an orfice between the valves that can plug or come loose and a light ball and spring that could have junk in it. First of all get it all greased up with rear axle off the ground like Marshall suggested. Good luck

Had the similar problem on a 98 R-62. I thought that I had been greasing it enough. I jacked up the back end and removed the tie rods and the cylinders to free the wheels. With it off the ground I could not turn the left wheel. I had to take the wheel off and beat the spindle out of the axle with a big sledge hammer. Cleaned it up and greased it up good and it turned fine after that. I do know that the steering pressure does have to be up to snuff though like Dan said. I don't care what the hours say about greasing, it has to be greased every single day. Good luck

I'd make sure there is not a hose inside steering column that is just rubbing side enough to give you that noise. If steering is normal otherwise and other machines don't have similiar noise I'd switch out steering hand pump with one from salvage. I think I've only ever switched out one hand pump and that was because it was draggy within the pump. All pressures and flows were up to par on that machine. Alot of the brains for the steering is in front hydralic section. Don't remember anything in there that gives you a noise but it can make steering stiff. Good luck
