Combines Need a Final answer

I think the 28 means 28000 pounds . Final drives on gleaners never been a problem .Compared to pathetic other brand ones what a joke. I'd be more concerned about your rear axle, mount and spindles only because of the bin ext. Hopefully there the same as a 52. Keep a eye on it all.

I had 2 R50's. One had heavy final drives and one had the standard s28 finals. The one with the standard final drives had a 20' platform and 67x34x30 tires. I never had a problem with either one of them.

I would agree that the rear axle and spindles are more of a concern. Our neighbor's R52 has had both spindles fail (it has a huge bin topper). To be fair, we have also had a spindle failure on our R62 (1994 vintage),but that was due to the failure of the steering "arm" portion of the spindle. It may have been due to improper setup of the steering cylinders and stops. Evidence from the scrap yards indicate Gleaner finals are pretty good. There just isn't much business done in them.

OK,help me with a for instance. Base weight of 20,361n plus 4200n cornhead plus 300bu corn(16,800n)equals a maximum possible 41,361n. How much weight do you think on the finals and how much on the steering tiresIJ Is that within the capacity of the final drivesIJ

Before there is any grain in the tank there is very little weight on the rear axle with the header on, maybe 1500 pounds max leaving at least 18000 up front, then add the grain and probably 60-65% of its weight stays on the front about 12000 or so totaling about 30000. If you have standard 10 ply tires you are probably over their rating if they are 23" wide, 30's would generally carry a bit more. You are asking more if the machine than I would have and only gaining 60 bushel capacity. I could agree somewhat if your rows are so long that a down and back puts 300 in the bin... Hopefully I'm way off on my numbers, but our 52 seems like it is real light in the rear with a six row on, once my brother hit the brake hard empty and I swear I saw a little daylight under one tire... Now I look back at what I have typed, will the rear axle if 2wd hold 11000 pounds without snapping spindlesIJ There may still be more up front..geeez

28000lbs per front wheel= 56000lbs. guessing rear 6000lbs - 8000lbs each. soft_rough ground adds stress. rough operater same . Make sure your steering stops are adjusted right otherwise hyd cylinder will keep pulling stressing big pin. I thought R42's had S24 standard IJ. good luck.

I looked at them today and it says s-29 right on the final housing. It's a '98 model. If you bought a used combine with the fixed rear axle would you switch out the spindles just for maintainanceIJ

Yeah i would because i broke one and its not any fun. I think later R62_72s have a poly lined block bolted to main frame and same on axle left and right. It just rubs and takes a bit of flex out of axle beam. Might want to have a look at one if yours does not have them.

My parts book says they switched from the S24s to the S28s in late 1992 on the 42s.
