John, Sounds like your stripper plates are set too wide.What is the corn yeildingIJRule of thumb is to take ear of corn,break in half,shell corn from cob,stick cob in upper end of stripper plates and move stripper plates in equal distance on both sides until cob just fits.Then,set front of stripper plates 1_8" narrower.Yes,I did say narrower at the front!!! Also check the speed of the cornhead going through field.Ear should be coming off of stalk about 2_3 the way up the stripper plates.You mentioned you had to quit because something was smoking.Does this corn have weed pressure.Sometimes if the grass knives are not set close enough to the snapping roll blades(.060 clearance)the snapping rolls can wrap.If run long enough this way,I am sure that it will build heat.
