Combines Need feedback on Helical Bar Concaves

FarmKid, I am running helical concaves, Gordon bars, and an Airjet chaffer and am getting along great in corn and soybeans. The helical concaves seem to me to thresh and release the crop much more agressively than stock concaves without crop damage. Rotor loss was always a concern in high yielding (200+)corn prior to the concave update, but is now a thing of the past.

I like the way you dig into things and research a project Farm Kid2. Just don't dig a hole for the red combine,Save the holes for the green ones.

Potsdam Boy I have not tried round rod concaves. The rods in the helical concaves looks to be about the same as in a large wire concave. I purchased them from Gordon Harvesting and yes I am running three. As a side note, the rod spacing is much wider than in the large wire concaves and yes I tried pulling wires out of conventional concaves before going to the helicals. A 1460 should take the same concaves as a 1660.

Farm Kid2, I too like the way you dig into things, but the large wire concaves are not designed too thrash wheat. Put in small wire concaves for wheat and than throw your cover plates onto the scrap metal pile where they belong as far as I'm concerned.

last year we were struggling to get all the wheat threshed with a standard rotor. I had started with 3 large wire concaves in and had the first one covered up. I thought I could improve things by going to small wires, so I took out n2 and n3 and put in small wire concaves that were in almost new condition. I couldn't tell that it made a bit of difference. After that, I decided there really wasn't any reason to run small wires. Why do you like them over the large wiresIJ

Farm Kid2, The small wire concaves have more threshing area than do the large wire concaves so if you're having trouble getting all the wheat threshed it makes sense to use the small wire concaves. Do you have the interrupter bars installed on the first concaveIJ

I had a bunch of the interrupter bars under the grain return, but I left the covered large wire concave in the front because I didn't want to take time to cover up the small wire concave (it had a bunch of interrupers on it). I decided that a covered large wire was better than an uncovered small wire in the front position, but I never got the make the swap to find out for sure. However, I could tell that going to the small wires in position 2and3 sure didn't help much.
