Combines Need more help controlling rotor loss

What are front right and left cylinder to concave clearancesIJ Also left and right rear clearancesIJ Also RPMs. What's your helical setupIJ Stacked or shimmed thresher and or seperatorIJ Channel helicalIJ Do you think it is getting caught up in shucks or not coming off cobIJ From what I've heard you need to get as much material in machine as possible. I suppose fully loaded N5 with just be a slight load on N7 so you likely need to push it. Specifically talking to a guy about super high moisture corn the other day and he said you need to stand two or three helicals straight for and aft between existing helicals and that will load it up enough so you get better seperation. Sounds like you allready have helicals removed from belly. There is also a so called corn ring for them old machines. It is a angle iron formed diameter of cage and is fastened straight for and aft next to discharge. There is a shorter one with three mount holes and longer one with 5 mount holes. Hope you can control without installing something like that. It may be in them super wet conditions that a seperator grate would help. Hopefully your flat iron or maybe some stationary rasp bars will duplicate that affect to some extent so you can see what your needing to do. Good luck

I run a 84 N5 with hyper mods.Installed seperator grate this year with a row of F2 rasp concave bars at 7 o'clock,also double stacked helicals on three doors on threashing side along with the lineup bars.Also built a wall between the discharge and seperator to keep seperated grain from falling back into discharge.Cylinder loss was around 12 grains per square foot with spreader unhooked in 170-180 b_a corn.Still wanted lower loss so I took 2 short peg bars and sharpened the leading edge.Installed them next to threashing end at 10:30 and 1:30 and it did cut loss,have not unhooked spreader and done a count.What is the wire spacing on the concaveIJ Mine were closer than one inch so I removed every other one to let the grain out as soon as it is threashed.

Where did you get you seperator grate D MayesIJ I called a local Agco dealer and they did not know anything about a seperator grate for an N Series combine. This morining I installed the 1_2x3_4 flat iron straps the width of the seperator, and also installed both sets of cage fingers andnoticed a little improvement, but still not satisfied. I would say there is around 10-15 seeds per square foot coming out the discharge but I did not count to see for sure. Seperation from the cob couldn't be better. I can run the cylinder clerance anywhere from 3_4" to 1_1_2" and it is still cleaning the cobs just fine. Sorry I got long winded but I am still disapointed with the job this machine is doing. The seperator grate I installed was made for a R60-70 non adjustable loewen brand.It was too long and I cut one section off.You have to weld in two 1_2 by 2 inch flat bars to bolt them to.Mark and drill the holes before welding in.I left enough of the cage for the front door to bolt to and not the flat bar I welded in which was where the cage openings start.The flat bars will trip up the material some but it would be better to put something in to cut the stuff that is why I put in F2 rasp concave bars and sharpened the peg bars leading edge.Set the concave as tight as you can and leave mostly whole cob.At 1_1_2" the grain may not all be coming off till late in the cylinder and not having time to seperate.With a 630 corn head 18 grain sq_ft behind cylinder discharge with spreader unhooked = 1 bushel per acre.

you mention something to cut the stuff, would some chopper knives workIJ was thinking of something easy to install without taking the rotor out. i was thinking of inserting some knives from the outside of the cage and bolting them fast somehow. let me know what you guys think or if there is some other way to mount something without taking the rotor out. just thinking of some other way instead of using a F2 rasp bar. thanks

Click on hyper mods at left,go down to bottom of page and click on misc rotor mods,then go down to where is says click here for "Heddy's Hyper Mods".After clicking there go to bottom of that page where it shows Knives in cage.That looks like it would work real good to me.I didn't have time to make them right now that is why I sharpened the peg bars and put them in.

thank you! that's exactly what i was thinking about. i've looked at other hyper mods but not that one. i may give this a try.

Forgot to mention the availability of corn doors. They are basically replacement doors for cage made of 1 X 1 1_4" holes instead of 1 X 1". Also aftermarket cages made completly of larger holes. large holes would surely be of some help. Might want to think about that if it is getting time for cage repairs. Good luck

I got the rotor loss down to about two to three seeds per square foot out the discharge with a 4 row head, and about three to four seeds max with the 6 row. It is working a lot better. I did a few different things; first of all I got the concave clearance at about 3_4 front and rear and left and rignt. Secondly I installed cage fingers and those two strips in the 6:30 and 5:30 postions of the cage. last of all I slowed the rotor down to between 230-280 rpms. Slowing down the rotor made a huge difference. Next year I am planning on putting in the seperator grate, which I have been told will make all the difference. As for the concave I think it is makeing a big difference in the seperation also. I have a little corn grinding but I think it is because of the new cylinder bars and new concave. Thanks for all the help guys.
