Combines Need More Power for Tough Beans

Jerry, hope you get some thoughts on this one...I run a 1460 also and understand where you are...some answers to your questions depend more on how much money you want to spend...If you go to a 1680 you will gain power and capacity both as well as some updates that enhance performance and will surely notice some increase over your 1460..however you can do some updates and modifications that will improve performance on your 1460.. a local custom cutter went from a 1460 to a 1680 and said there is a world of difference..he now is running a 1660 with a 2188 and says the gap is not nearly as big between those two...I don't know the specifics about your machine so will make some assumptions solely for the purpose of offering suggestions..first will guess you have the Amboch injector pump..these need to be gone over occasionally to assure engine power remains where it is supposed to be and you can be dowh 30 Hp with no other noticable problems..if you can take it off and don't need to replace the head, $300.00 will do the job...second for tough beans a specialty rotor makes a huge difference..the above mentioned operator often runs all night once the beans get dry...grate changes can help..disrupters help..tell us what you have and maybe we can be of specific help

we just traded to a 1688 from a 1660, wow what a world of differance. you can keep a 1688 full with a 20 ft. head and a 6 row corn head. on our 1660 in beans we tipped the viens all the way back and speeded up the rotor 100rpms. on the 1688 we leave the viens in the middle.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I think the engine is in fine general shape but will discuss the suggestions with my mechanic. I think the problem is that it is rated at 170 hp and the newer ones have had continued hp increases as we have demanded more from the machines. Would a 1680 be comparable to a 1688 in horsepowerIJ For my size of farm, I think 1680 could be in the price range I should consider. I do not think trading for a 1660 would gain much capacity.
