We have found that the breakage problem comes from slack in the drive system. This drive converts rotary motion into lateral (back and forth) motion. Any slack in the drive system (the hex hole bearings are the main source of this slack) gets transfered to the ends of the lateral stroke, causing impact. Keep the needle bearings (including the pin the bearings run on) in good condition. The hex hole bearings can be replaced with locking collar bearings however the hex shafts have to be modified to accept this.
